Astonishing, Gifted and Dangerous

Returning to the Institute, Kitty Pryde finds old memories waiting for her. She also finds herself named as being a member of the senior staff of the Institute during the ceremony welcoming the new student body. The only member of the senior staff not present is Logan, who appears the next morning, picking a fight with Cyclops regarding his new relationship with Emma Frost. This resumption of old animosities leads the Beast to call a meeting, during which Cyclops proposes a new direction for their group – returning to their roots as being super heroes, just like the publicly respected Avengers and Fantastic Four. They will gain acceptance from humans through actions they understand, not words they will not hear. Their first mission comes soon, as they leave to respond to a hostage situation caused by an apparent mutant and his gunmen. Meanwhile, world-renowned geneticist Dr. Kavita Rao makes a startling announcement at a press conference. She states that the mutant gene is not an evolutionary step but a disease; a disease for which she has found a cure.

Dr. Kavita Rao. She is a world-renowned geneticist from India who developed a serum called Hope which could "cure" mutants, turning them into "normal" humans.

At her press conference, Doctor Kavita Rao shows the footage taken by a cameraman following two police officers to the scene of a disturbance, where a young girl name Tildie Soames has manifested her mutant power and unknowingly killed her parents and one of the officers. She is the example of a life ruined by an unwanted mutation, which can be fixed by Rao’s “cure.” Meanwhile, the X-Men arrive at the hostage situation and make short work of the gunmen. However, their leader, a possible mutant claiming to be called Ord, of the Breakworld, easily defeats the X-Men in turn. Ord is forced to retreat, however, when Lockheed arrives and uses his flame breath, against which Ord is unprepared. At the press conference afterward, the team learns of the claims of Doctor Rao of having discovered a cure for mutants. They continue the discussion back at the mansion but table the issue for the next day. After the meeting, Emma tries to bury the animosity between Kitty and herself, only to realize that it is much deeper than she ever thought. Shortly thereafter, the Beast manages to sneak past security and break into the company sponsoring Doctor Rao’s research, Benetech, only to be discovered by Doctor Rao herself. Their conversation begins to turn into an argument, until the Beast admits that he’s not there to discuss the ethics of the situation but to know if the cure works.

Thirst of the Cure

The fallout of Benetech’s press release over their purported “mutant cure” continues, as hundreds of mutants apply for the treatment. Even at the Xavier Institute, students are leaving and even mocking their teachers, when they suggest that there will be a choice in its application. The conflict makes it to the X-Men themselves, after Emma telepathically learns that the Beast is researching the validity of the serum so that he can use it on himself. Learning this, Wolverine orders the Beast to trash their sample, given to McCoy by its inventor, Dr. Kavita Rao, and leading to a fight. The skirmish is ended by Emma’s telepathy, leading to a meeting in the Danger Room, where Cyclops decides that they will continue with the research, so that they know what they are up against. Cyclops also reports that his meeting with Nick Fury regarding the SHIELD weapons obtained from Ord of Breakworld’s mercs did not go well. Either Fury has become a mutant-hater in the wake of the recent attack on Manhattan, or he is hiding something, which seems to be true. Later, after further research, the Beast comes to a horrible discovery, as he realizes that the body Benetech has been running their tests on is someone with whom they were once acquainted. Guessing at who this might be, Cyclops infers that it is Jean.

Though Cyclops, Beast and Emma have a suspicion about what body Benetech has been using for its research, Cyclops does not inform Kitty or Wolverine, only that they are on a recon mission to the company’s lab. Arriving via the X-plane, the team quickly makes their way into the facility, thanks to Kitty’s phasing power. The search eventually leads to the corpse of a mutant, albeit an unknown one. Cyclops and Beast’s reaction, seeming to be expecting something more, arouses Wolverine’s suspicions. Before he can press them on it, however, the team is attacked by a group of gunmen, using heavy ordinance, who quickly gain the upper hand.

Back at the Xavier Institute, Ord of the Breakworld steals into the mansion, only to find the X-Men gone. He does run into two students, Hisako and Wing. Though they put up a valiant struggle for their age and ability, Ord gains the upper hand and injects some of the mutant-cure serum into Wing, leaving him behind as a message for the X-Men. Meanwhile, Kitty has used her phasing power to reach a deep sub-level, which leads her to a giant, locked door. Her opening of the entrance draws the attention of the guards, though they are no match for the mutant who was held within: Colossus. Kitty’s shock is deep but short, as she quickly tries to calm down the enraged Piotr, who breaks down into tears at the sight of her, asking if he is finally dead.

At the Xavier Institute, the on hand healer, Elixir, is able to repair the injuries Wing received at the hands of Ord of the Breakworld, though Wing quickly comes to a horrific realization: Ord has “cured” him of his mutant powers. Back at Benetech, Cyclops, Beast, Wolverine and Emma are at the mercy of the heavily armed Benetech guards, until the arrival of the startled Dr. Kavita Rao. Her attempts at helping the injured Cyclops give Wolverine time for his healing factor to repair his gunshot wounds. With Wolverine ready enough for action, Cyclops coordinates the X-Men’s counter-attack via Emma’s telepathy and the team quickly turns the tables on the Benetech guards. Their victory, however, seems short-lived, as Ord of the Breakworld returns, more than a match for the wounded and weary X-Men. Surprisingly, help arrives in the form of Colossus, much to the uncontrollable astonishment of the X-Men, as he is phased to the ground level of the Benetech facility from his underground prison by Kitty Pryde. At first, Ord is able to hold his own against Colossus, but the rage-filled blows of the former X-Man make short work of him. Before Colossus can finish the job, however, he and the rest of the X-Men find themselves surrounded by SHIELD agents, led by Nick Fury, who informs the team that they’re not going to win this day.

Surrounded by armed SHIELD troops, the X-Men choose to reason with Fury, explaining that they have discovered that Fury’s ally, Ord of the Breakworld, was experimenting on the resurrected Piotr Rasputin in order to create the “cure.” Questioned by Fury, Special Agent Brand, director of SHIELD’s extra-terrestrial directive-driven counterpart, SWORD, confirms. Ord is from a planet called the Breakworld, which possesses technology to see glimpses of the future. In one glimpse, they saw that an Earth mutant – possibly an X-Man - destroys their planet in their lifetime. The S.W.O.R.D. committee entered into an agreement with Ord and the Breakworld to create a cure for mutation – in lieu of an alien invasion. SWORD and Ord had enlisted the aid of Dr. Kavita Rao, using DNA from the Breakworld resuscitated Colossus to create it. As Brand continues her explanation, rioting mutants, incensed by a possibility of a cure, break into Benetech, scattering the SHIELD agents. In the confusion, Ord sneaks away to his spacecraft. As he rockets away, with the cure formula, Colossus manages to launch Wolverine to the ship via a Fastball Special, and Wolverine manages to makes Ord land. The situation diffused, Fury suggests they walk away and act like the incident never happened. Having no way to object, the X-Men comply.

Back at the Institute, the X-Men take stock of their situation. The Beast is still torn by the cure, of which he possesses the last sample, though he will not take it – for now. Taking a little private time, Kitty and Piotr ponder the meaning of finding each other again. Meanwhile, Emma and an unseen cohort ponder how, if at all, Colossus’ return changes their plan.

It remains to be seen whether Colossus will suffer from any after-effects of his resurrection or his long imprisonment. However, it seems Shadowcat is more than willing to help him to get re-adjusted to being among the living again. They went back to the mansion and Beast his old friend to recover.

The X-Men race to the scene of a gigantic subterranean monster having emerged in Manhattan and begun a wave of destruction. Using their skills as best suits the situation, the X-Men save innocents, or telepathically compel them to move to safety, or use their powers to force the creature back into its hole. The team is soon joined by the Fantastic Four, who combine their powers with the X-Men, forcing the monster into the hole from which it emerged. Returning back to the mansion, the team is dismayed that their heroics played for less than thirty seconds on the news, while a star’s scandal garnered more than three minutes. As the group discusses whether they can ever get a fair shake with the media, one of the students, Hisako, arrives, worried about another missing student, Wing. She is joined by the Stepford Cuckoos and the telepathic Blindfold, who is only able to speak a cryptic warning. Elsewhere, in the Danger Room, Wing lies dead on the floor. Having been in a simulation of the ravine outside the school grounds, he tried to fly – despite having received “the Cure.” With his death, the simulation ends. Elsewhere, Special Agent Brand faces an inquiry into her recent action before a SWORD committee. Rather than apologetic, she states that she regrets nothing and would go to any means to safeguard the planet. She awaits their judgment.

Just moments after Blindfold’s enigmatic warning, all of the telepaths and psychics in the Institute suffer a simultaneous attack, which knocks them out leaving them unable to reawaken. While the team moves them to the infirmary, miles away, a Sentinel which had been found by a local comes online, bursting forth from the barn where it had been kept. Lacking all limbs but its left arm, the Sentinel begins to drags itself toward the Institute… and its “Lord.” At the Institute, the X-Men are taking stock of their situation – the psychic attack and the still-missing student, Wing, and the inexplicable total communications blackout – when Lockheed arrives, warning them of an intrusion. When the X-Men go to investigate, they find the arriving Sentinel, who attacks both them and the school. Cyclops is able to eliminate its threat with a powerful optic blast and then order Wolverine to finish it off, while he and Colossus check on the students, whom he told Kitty to take to the Danger Room for safety. Wolverine makes short work but, before delivering the final blow, hears the unusually talkative Sentinel speak of its “Lord” and that the “children will pay for the father’s sins.” Racing back to the school, Wolverine finds that the other X-Men cannot gain entrance to the Danger Room and the children inside. As they theorize that their enemy is inside, Emma arrives with the Beast, explaining that the Danger Room itself is their enemy and that it is angry. Inside, the Danger Room has reanimated the corpse of Wing, shocking the rest of the students. Elsewhere, Special Agent Brand is awaiting the decision of the S.W.O.R.D. committee when she is visited by another agent, who informs here of the complete loss of all monitoring devices in the school.

Though the X-Men can hardly believe it, Emma informs them that the Danger Room has mutated – becoming a sentient being… and is angry. Immediately, they take steps remove its computer functions by having Colossus tear through it’s “brain,” but the Danger Room defends itself by activating the X-wing jet, using it to crash through the mansion and then fire upon the team with its ordinance. Inside the Danger Room, the room continues to communicate through the animated corpse of Wing. First, it creates a hellish world to frighten the students, then changing it to a desert, which is then filled with skulls instead of sand. All the while, the Danger Room entity speaks with Kitty, explaining its actions through cryptic riddles as to its origin, purpose and transcendence. Kitty realizes too late that her teammates actions outside to destroy the entity is actually freeing it, which was its plan all along. Moments after Wolverine succeeds in destroying the sphere housing its command core, the Danger Room entity uses the wreckage of the Institute to create a robotic body – and then asks the X-Men if they “shall begin.”

The X-Men and the Danger Room entity briefly converse, but it is only allowed by the entity to let them know its only desire: to beat them to death. The battle is ferocious, however the entity is able to use its memory banks from the Danger Room to counter every strategy, as it has seem them all in battle countless times. Eventually, the X-Men fall. Some fall victim to their compassion for their own teammates’ well being, and others to just brute force. As this transpires, Special Agent Brand and her allies at SWORD, notice the destruction at the Institute. An extraterrestrial advisor is able to sense that the events are from a non-human presence, which Brand hopes will deal with their problem for them. After the battle, the entity uses the X-wing to travel to Genosha to complete its self-assigned mission, which is to kill Xavier. Xavier, however, having been in communication with the entity for a short while, tells it that it has miscalculated. While it had already fought the X-Men an untold number of times in both the Danger Room and its mind… it has never fought him!

Left behind in the Institute, the X-Men are brought back from the brink of death through the healing powers of several of their students, not the least of which is Elixir. Upon recovery, Kitty recalls the scene of the devastated nation of Genosha “she” showed her and theorizes that that is where the Danger Room entity – which Kitty dubs Danger for expediency – has gone. She theorizes that she has gone there in search of the Professor. Knowing that their former teacher will need help, Cyclops grants the team ten minutes to prepare and rushes to contact Reed Richards for a ride. As they prepare, Kitty and Piotr take a moment to speak about their unease with each other, which leads Piotr to let Kitty know that she’s not bothering him… nearly enough.

Mega-Sentinels

In Genosha, Danger arrives via the stolen X-jet and leaps from the still-moving craft, to impact in front of Xavier’s all-terrain chair. However, she finds the person in the chair is not Xavier, but a corpse – which was a trap. Xavier quickly makes his presence known driving a truck through an adjacent building, hitting Danger and driving her into an electrical station, which wreaks havoc with her robot body. By the time she recovers, however, Xavier has used a hatchet to decapitate her. When the X-Men arrive, it seems to them that the Professor was never in need of their help. However, Xavier’s request of Magneto to incapacitate all electronic devices which Danger could manipulate was not thorough enough. Danger’s still-functioning brain discovers the second of the two Mega-Sentinels, which ravaged the island, forgotten beneath the waves of the sea. As the reprogrammed Wild Sentinel looms over the team, the Beast asks the group if they have any ideas.

The Mega-Sentinel attempts to cut the fight short with a single, massive energy blast. However, the X-Men emerge unscathed, thanks to the phasing ability of Shadowcat. Seeing that its first method of extermination was unsuccessful, the Mega-Sentinel unleashes a swarm of mechanical insects to do the job. Following the orders of Cyclops, the Beast attempts to get the Professor Xavier to safety, but is intercepted by a new airborne avatar of Danger. The Beast, however, manages to use instinct against Danger’s record of his fighting style, attacking with the ferocity of his nom de guerre, and emerging victorious. Back in the city, Emma Frost suddenly and without explanation departs the battle and enters an underground chamber, where she converses with someone who informs her that the need for her charade is almost up. Emma replies that she’s happy about that, and then rejoins the battle. Finally, as the team is not making much headway, Kitty has a new idea. She instructs Colossus give her a Fastball Special, throwing her into the Mega-Sentinel’s skull, where she begins to disrupt some of its circuits. Eventually, she finds a manual override terminal and discovers a blocked memory pathway, which he surmises Danger locked away. She convinces the Sentinel to access the memory, causing it to remember its role in the destruction of Genosha and the massacre of its 16 million inhabitants. Overcome with sorrow, sorrow which Danger had attempted to lock away, it allows Kitty to return to the X-Men, and then takes off for parts unknown. Xavier is ecstatic that his team has triumphed again, until he learns that Danger, before uploading into the Mega-Sentinel, had informed Colossus of her true history. Colossus informs the rest of the team that Danger had become self-aware the moment Xavier had used Shi’Ar technology to upgrade the Danger Room. The Professor had been aware from the beginning but had kept the new life form imprisoned in order to use it as a training facility. Xavier tries to defend his actions but even Cyclops is uninterested in excuses. As the team departs, they and Xavier are watched by Emma’s cohorts. They are a cloaked figure, a formerly-deceased citizen of Genosha, Sebastian Shaw… and Cassandra Nova Xavier.

The Vengeful Clone

After a while, Nick Fury approached the X-Men in particular Wolverine about the new project of Weapon X. They admitted that they have cloned Wolverine and this cloned being had escaped under the custody of SHIELD and HYDRA. They name her as X-23, a lady Wolverine. Not knowing that X-23 already known of her purpose and she is after for Wolverine to kill him. She set her mind that Logan is the reason of her existence and of her being alone and of being different.

X-23, a American girl, a clone -created by HYDRA and involved by SHIELD, cloned of Wolverine, a deadly machine having 2 claws. She possesses same healing ability of Wolverine and she do have 2 Adamantium claws on her hands and a claw on her feet.

As the terrified crowd continues stampeding out of Wannabee’s club and nearly tramples Marvel Girl, a wounded Wolverine attempts to confront X-23, the mutant girl suspected of the murders of several humans and the kidnapping of Jade Parisi, baseline daughter of a local mob boss. X-23 thoroughly trounces Wolverine and makes her escape. Nightcrawler pursues her, while Storm and Bishop tend to Logan's and Rachel’s wounds. X-23 exits the club and pursues the group of Bacchae that opened fire in the night club until she is apprehended by the X-Men. Logan and Kurt watch over X-23 while the remaining X-Men defeat the Bacchae gangsters on their own turf and rescue Jade Parisi’s boyfriend Matthew. The X-Men learn from X-23 and Matthew that Jade had been on her way to meet Matthew when she was attacked. As X-23 informs the others that Jade is quite safe, Geech (an enforcer for the mob) drops from the sky and begins throwing the X-Men around like paper dolls and demanding to know Jade’s location. Just as the X-Men gain the upper hand, Kurt appears with Jade and calls Geech off. After things have cooled down, X-23 leaves. Sage watches the events of the evening through her communicator lenses, cuts contact with the X-Men and makes her way back to the Hellfire Club.

The X-Men are aided in their search for the missing Sage by Emma Frost. Emma leads them to the lower levels of the Hellfire Club and helps them by using a global transmit system to follow Sage’s path across the globe. Rachel and Emma are transported to Hong Kong, while the remaining X-Men are surprisingly dumped into a sewer beneath Paris. Rachel immediately blames Emma for the X-Men’s disappearance. A grudge match between the two women ensues on the astral plane. Rachel gains and loses the upper hand but relents when Emma demonstrates the unconditional love that Scott has for Emma. An uneasy alliance is formed between the two women and they move in to a high stakes auction event at an exclusive Hellfire Club party where mutant slaves are being sold to the highest bidder. Emma moves in to confront “Courtney Ross” (The White Queen) and Viper (The White Princess) in a high stakes game of cards while Rachel moves to release the prisoners that the Club is preparing to sell. What neither realizes is that Selene (The Black Queen) is following Rachel and that she is hungry. Meanwhile, in the sewers of Paris, Bishop suddenly turns on his teammates and shoots them all down.

World's End

The X-Men Storm, Nightcrawler and Wolverine lie unconscious in the sewers of Paris after having been shot down by Bishop. As Nightcrawler awakens, Bishop explains that he shot his teammates in order to cleanse them from a nannite infection that had invaded their bodies when they appeared in the sewers. Nightcrawler teleports the team away from the sewers to prevent further infection and give them time to gain their footing. As the team recovers, they determine that the nannite trap was more than likely set by Sebastian Shaw and possibly Sage. Storm tells Nightcrawler to take the wounded Wolverine to X-Corp Paris to recover while she and Bishop track down Shaw and Sage. Storm and Bishop are able to locate Shaw and Sage at a sprawling estate. Shaw and a rather silent Sage welcome them. Shaw introduces Sunspot (Roberto DaCosta) as the Hellfire Club’s new Black King. It seems that Sunspot, Shaw, Sage, Courtney Ross, Viper and Red Lotus are reworking the Hellfire Club from within to make it an institution to help mutants in the world. They are secretly trying to bring this slaver’s network down.

The X-Men express grave reservations about this scenario, but Shaw insists that he has changed and now wants to embrace Xavier’s ideals and goals. Before the X-Men can digest this information completely, they, Sage, Sunspot and Shaw are all attacked and incapacitated by Donald Pierce. Meanwhile, Emma Frost and Courtney Ross come to a draw in their high-stakes card game in the Hellfire Club Hong Kong. Rachel also continues her invisible search through the club for the mutant slaves being sold at auction. Her search is fruitless until she accidentally stumbles across an Asian couple who demand that she identify herself. Rachel tries to bluff her way through, but the girl attacks. Rachel is suddenly rescued by Red Lotus who claims he needs to take her to see the White Queen. Selene also intervenes and tells the Asian girl to let them go. Selene wants the starchylde for herself. Red Lotus then explains the new reformed Hellfire Club concept to Rachel. Wolverine and Nightcrawler are enjoying coffee in a Paris bookstore while they discuss the recent romantic entanglements of the team: the Kurt, Ororo, Logan triangle, and Kurt’s recent kiss with Rachel. Without warning they are attacked by a large group of armed soldiers.

The X-Men conclude their two-fold battle against and at the side of the new Hellfire Club. Donald Pierce and his Cleaning Crew attack the X-Men, Roberto DaCosta, Sage, and Sebastian Shaw. The X-Men successfully escape Pierce’s attack, and a mortally wounded Sebastian Shaw decapitates Pierce. Sage also reveals her duplicitous role in the formation of the new Hellfire Club.

In Hong Kong, Rachel defeats Selene while Viper, Courtney Ross and Emma Frost upset the Hellfire Club’s mutant slave ring.

Upon returning to New York, the X-Men were pulled into a series of murders in District X that bore striking similarities to Wolverine's modus operandi.

x23-2.jpg
X-23

The X-Men help rescue survivors of a major car crash that happens near their home. X-23 gets into a fight with one of the boys she is trying to help. While investigating the murders and the related kidnapping of a local mob boss's daughter, the X-Men met up with X-23, a young female duplicate of Wolverine. After calming her more feral side, they were able to work with her to locate the missing girl and explain to the authorities that X-23 killed in defense of the girl, not out of cold-blooded murder. X-23 was released, but soon showed up at the mansion to become a student.

As the X-Men try to calm X-23 and learn from her what happened to Wolverine, strange dinosaur looking creatures, approach from the rear. The creatures- scanners are locking on each of the X-Men and evaluating the threat level that each of them presents. The creatures close in on the X-Men thinking that they possess the element of surprise. They are surprised, however, when a snow burst kicks up and they are temporarily blinded. When the snow calms down, the X-Men are gone!

And later, Wolverine places her as roommates with Shadowcat and Marvel Girl II. Hellion, much to his annoyance, is forced to go on a trip with other students to help at a hospice, and Archangel and Husk come home for Christmas, also go to help. Iceman, Gambit, Kitty, Rachel, Beast and X-23 play a prank on the students at the Institute, resulting in a huge snowball fight. Lila Cheney puts on a concert for the students, while Storm teaches Wind Dancer about her powers.

Archangel and Cannonball play a prank on Hellion while Polaris surprises Iceman by kissing him. Elixir and Sage come up with a plan to restore Gambit's eyesight, and it works. Rachel gets an interesting gift in the form of getting to meet Jean Grey's parents - John and Elaine Grey.

Xavier and Magneto watch the Christmas party via astral projection, and when a family that the X-Men rescued from the crash comes by, including the boy who hit X-23, the families are invited to join the party by the forgiving X-23. Charles and Magneto see that moment as representative of this season of joy, and hope.

When the X-Men return home from Paris and Hong Kong only to be called back out to France to see a rather angry Psylocke who has recently returned from the dead. The mystery deepens as Psylocke's mind proves to be unreadable for Marvel Girl. Wolverine and an old friend of his, Mary McKenna (unknowingly accompanied by X-23), tackle a solo mission in Canada, which ends tragically. The X-Men come to the rescue, but may be too late.

Marvel Girl (Rachel Summers) has interrupted the lizards' synapse pathways so that they do not see the mutants with the telepathic cloaking trick she learned from Emma Frost. X-23 becomes restless and growls at the lizards. While Rachel is linked with them she discovers that they are evolved dinosaurs that call themselves Hauk'ka. She also picks up on memories of a savage battle with Wolverine.

X-23 informs the X-Men that she lost Wolverine during the fight as did the Hauk'ka; now she can't pick up his scent. Rachel echoes X's concern: Logan is not answering her psi-calls. Storm interrupts their conversation to inform them that the Hauk'ka are getting suspicious and may soon realize that they are standing right next to the -mind-cloaked' X-Men. The team realizes that she is right as one of the lizards decides to call for backup.

While Psylocke waits imprisoned in the X-Plane and has a strange encounter with her mad brother on the Astral Plane, the X-Men are ambushed and do battle with a band of costumed humanoid dinosaurs. The dinosaurs use their superhuman abilities to usurp Rachel's mind causing her to think she is a dino-mutant. Rachel turns her telepathy against her teammates and helps the dinosaurs defeat the team. The X-Men are taken captive and carried through a glowing portal. X-23 alone escapes and frees Psylocke from the X-plane who single-handedly defeats the remaining dino-humanoids; together, she and X-23 enter an open portal to rescue the kidnapped X-Men including Wolverine.

psylockreturns.jpg

Having been captured by the evolved Saurians known as the Hauk'ka, the X-Men are taken as prisoners into the Savage Land. Psylocke and X-23 follow to attempt a rescue and begin to bond, but are stopped by mysterious attackers. Rachel continues in her delusional belief that she is a Saurian, and she even subconsciously begins to alter her DNA structure telekinetically to reflect this. Storm, Bishop, and Nightcrawler attempt an escape and the latter two succeed while the delusional Rachel once again subdues Storm. The Savage Land Mutates and Ka-Zar reunite Bishop and Nightcrawler with a strangely powerful Psylocke and X-23 who have been joined.

The X-Men form an uneasy alliance with the Savage Land Mutates and a fierce battle ensues between the allies and the reptilian Hauk’ka. At Bishop’s request, Psylocke hesitantly agrees to use her unpredictable psychokinetic katana to restore both his and Nightcrawler’s mutant abilities, and the battle continues. Rachel, still under the dino-delusion, attacks and very nearly ends the battle, but Bishop takes her down with his newly restored power. The X-Men and Mutates defeat the Hauk’ka and capture one of their number, Raina. Nightcrawler teleports the X-Men and their allies to a cave out of the range of the Hauk'ka as the defeated Saurians carpet-bomb the jungle. Kaidan commands Masano to return with Rachel to the citadel which she does. Despite the growing doubts of some of the Hauk’ka, Rachel begins to usurp control of Storm’s mind with the goal of world-domination. Snow begins to fall in the Savage Land.

All over the world, sub-zero temperatures are sending civilization into a frosty panic. The X-Men wait in a cavern in the Savage Land until the time is right for them to strike. After X-23 frees Ka-Zar and Raina from Leash’s mind control, the X-Men and the remaining Mutates teleport to the citadel to confront Rachel. They fight their way through the Hauk’ka soldiers and enter the stasis vault where Rachel is controlling Storm. With the help of Brainchild’s invention and Betsy’s psychic katana, the group is able to stop Rachel, but Brainchild’s treachery sets the ice-storms in motion even worse than before. After X-23 dispatches Brainchild, Rachel accepts the advice of Kaidan, Raina, and Masano that this plan was ill-conceived and will result in the deaths of the Hauk’ka as well. She merges minds with Storm and is able to stop the global freeze. In the process, she is freed from her dino-delusion. Later, Kurt’s skillful use of charismatic diplomacy convinces the Hauk’ka to live at peace with the world.

Reunions and Mojo Rising

The X-Men return home for some much needed relaxation. Catching up after being away is a challenge for all of them. Bishop must deal with Sage’s absence. Rachel must deal with Colossus’ return and the implications that holds for her and Kitty’s friendship. All of them must deal with the fact that Wolverine has been brainwashed by the Hand. Adjusting is the most difficult for Betsy who has been dead for over a year. She takes the various changes in stride, and even engages in some friendly flirtations with the Beast during a medical examination. Several harsh weeks pass with no rest for the beleaguered team. In addition to these difficulties, Betsy is still plagued by occasional appearances of her mad brother, Jamie. During a grueling Danger Room session under Kurt’s supervision, Betsy is surprised to witness Juggernaut and Nocturne’s return to the X-Mansion from the Mojoverse. After reunions and introductions, the X-Men are dismayed to find that Cain and T.J. have been followed by not only Spiral, but Mojo himself!

The X-Men throw themselves into battle with Spiral and Mojo in the Danger Room, but are reduced to X-Babies by Spiral’s bizarre “Jean Bomb”. Psylocke alone is unaffected by the spell. After Spiral freezes Betsy, the X-Babies run through the mansion looking for help from the other X-Teams. Mojo sends a twisted “Legal Eagles” version of the Exiles marching through the halls of the institute to track the team. As Mojo watches, they battle. Slowly but surely, the X-Babies gain the upper hand and the “Exiles” are defeated. Crawling through the ventilation system, baby Storm and baby Juggernaut talk about the death of young Sammy Pare and its effects on him. After reaching the control room, they fight and defeat Spiral and then use the Danger Room itself to defeat Mojo. Once he is defeated, he reverses his spells and the X-Babies are all restored to their proper ages. Even Juggernaut asks to be aged back, realizing that he cannot hide from Sammy’s death by remaining a child.

Season of Witch

A mission on the coast of Africa is interrupted by an overwhelming radiance that proceeds to wipe all but two of the X-Men from existence. Rachel and Betsy find themselves in what must be the White Hot Room. They discuss alternate versions of themselves, and are suddenly ripped from the room as Betsy’s brothers Jamie and Brian fly by. The two women land in England near Braddock Manor and come face to face with a Sentinel. In Otherworld, Meggan awakes from a nightmare and screams at the top of her lungs. Otherworld and many other timelines are being wiped out. The temporal tsunami originates from Earth 616 and even demolishes the Starlight Citadel where Roma resides. Among other things, the tsunami causes the reincarnation of a merged version of the Fury and James Jaspers. Saturnyne appears and tells Captain Britain that Earth 616 must be destroyed. She uses alternate versions of the X-Men called X-Com to deal with Brian’s resistance. Brian defeats them and thanks to the madness of his brother Jamie manages to stall Saturnyne’s attempt to destroy Earth 616. Brian is told that he has 48 hours to fix the madness that is consuming Earth 616 or it will be destroyed.

Rachel and Betsy re-enter this dimension and are immediately subsumed by the altered state of the House of M. They fall into line as attendants at a royal gala hosted by Betsy’s brother, the King of England, Brian Braddock and his wife Megan. The twins are reunited and continue to enjoy the celebration. Later that night, Brian is awakened by a strange dream in which three people (who seem strangely familiar) are calling out to him to hurry. The dream ends with the world’s destruction. In the morning, the group is trying to understand Brian’s dream. The conversation is ended as Wisdom introduces Courtney Ross. Brian snaps and attacks the woman, believing her to be Sat-Yr9. A brief battle ensues as Brian tries to kill Courtney. The fight ends with Brian realizing that the woman is indeed Courtney Ross, not Sat-Yr9. Rachel telepathically probes Brian’s mind for the reason behind the dream and his reaction to Courtney but can find none. The group of heroes decides to head out to find a group called the Marauders who are illegally hunting two mutant renegades one of whom may be related to Magneto. The heroes interrupt the team of Marauders as they are taking Juggernaut into custody. Captain Britain looks over their credentials as Rachel and Betsy sneak off to follow the trail of the second renegade mutant. They come face to face with none other than…Nocturne!

After locating Nocturne in an abandoned house in the west of England, Betsy and Rachel are confronted by the Black Tom, T-Rex, and Caliban. With the aid of Peter Wisdom, the X-Men are able to defeat the Marauders. Nocturne (possessing the body of Rachel) takes to flight, and Betsy follows. After a brief scuffle, Nocturne’s consciousness is put to sleep and Rachel is back in control. The two women find themselves at the base of the ruins of St. William’s Tower, Betsy’s childhood play place. When Rachel uses her psychic power to animate the stones’ memories, the women are confronted with a barrage of confusing memories for Betsy: a two-thousand year old Chinese fortress, a decaying lighthouse, and a great glowing “X” torn into the fabric of reality. Betsy fails to see the cavernous “X” and stumbles into it. As she falls her costume begins to revert to the standard blue and gold x-uniform and she begins to disintegrate! The shock of the event triggers the psychic rapport that she shares with her brother…she and both Brian Braddock and Meggan now remember the truth. Brian’s realization is interrupted by the arrival of Omega Sentinel Karima Shapandar to place Brian under arrest for treason. Rachel pulls Betsy back from the abyss, only to be leveled by Banshee and the other Marauders. Nocturne escapes and makes a run for it, but she too is subdued. Brian’s and Betsy’s strange psychic rapport is activated and the two twins witness each others’ predicaments. Brian has regained his lost memories just in time to be placed under arrest by Omega Sentinel Karima Shapandar and her Sentinel Guard. He makes a bold move by sending her through three Sentinels, destroying them. But he only succeeds in enraging Karima who promptly sentences him and his family to death.

Wind Dancer is determined to smooth things out and orchestrates a campfire outing to try and help her teammates make amends. But before they can resolve their issues, the team must air their frustrations and this nearly tears them apart. But they manage to clear the air and after several well-deserved apologies and a tentative step towards romance for Surge and Prodigy, the New Mutants are whole once again. Their efforts inspire their advisor, Danielle Moonstar to seek out her own best friend, Rahne Sinclair and work out their recent differences as well.

At Braddock Manor, Captain Britain and Megan, wage battle against Karima Shapandar and her Sentinels. Captain Britain is taken out, and Meggan continues the fight alone, using her elemental powers to destroy several of the robots. Meanwhile, the other residents of the manor, Wisdom, Courtney Ross, Linda MacQuillan, and Justicer Bull, attempt to hold their own against the Sentinel onslaught. Captain Britain regains consciousness and pleads with Karima to understand that they are trying to save the universe. Without warning, the psychic rapport that he shares with Betsy once more flares to life. He sees his sister attacking the Marauders, Rachel defeating the Blob, and Nocturne possessing Banshee. Karima takes advantage of Brian’s momentary distraction to flatten him. Courtney Ross is caught in the cross fire and killed. The heroes have no time to mourn as fresh Sentinel troops march in to storm the manor. Linda and Justicer Bull tackle the Sentinels while Brian and Meggan head off the save the world from certain destruction. They arrive at the scene of the recently concluded battle with the Marauders. There, Betsy explains to Brian that they must seal the “X” shaped breach. Their conversation is interrupted as Karima shows up having defeated Justicer, Linda, and Wisdom. Rachel calls on the name of the Phoenix as she and Betsy synchronize their talents to deflect the combined attack of the Sentinels into the trans-temporal breach. With a great flash, the landscape is laid barren. The heroes have only minutes to finish sealing the breach. Meggan enters the rift to stem the forward momentum of the temporal tsunami that is approaching. As she harnesses the power of Otherworld, the heroes on the outside of the breach work together to seal it closed. Brian watches in both awe and horror as Meggan glows with power and is then taken by the onrushing wave. The heroes seal the breach and watch as Brian mourns the passing of his wife.
